Community Foundation Responds to Southern Indiana’s Evolving Needs with Nearly $85,000 in Grants
NEW ALBANY, Ind. – An expanded childcare classroom. A meal delivered to a homebound senior. Transportation to a job interview or court appointment. A warm meal for a family facing food insecurity. A safe place for a young person in crisis.
While these needs may look different, each represents an opportunity to strengthen the quality of life for residents throughout Southern Indiana.
The Community Foundation of Southern Indiana (CFSI) recently awarded $84,742.55 in discretionary grants to five nonprofit organizations serving Clark and Floyd counties. The investments support projects that align with several priorities identified through the Foundation’s Priorities for Progress in Southern Indiana: 2025 Update, including childcare, transportation, food security, and services for older adults.
“One of the greatest strengths of the Community Impact Fund is its flexibility,” said Linda Speed, CFSI President and CEO. “It allows us to respond when opportunities arise, support organizations addressing our community’s evolving needs, and invest in projects that improve quality of life for people throughout Clark and Floyd counties.”
This quarter’s discretionary grant recipients include:
Clark-Floyd Systems of Care and Prevent Child Abuse
$18,750
Purchase a transportation vehicle that will help individuals access court appearances, housing appointments, job interviews, substance use treatment, and other critical services
Community Kitchen
$5,500
Help offset food costs for the approximately 57,000 to 60,000 meals the organization provides each year to individuals and families experiencing food insecurity
Discovery Time Child Care and Preschool
$31,706.75
Furnish classrooms and learning spaces as part of a facility expansion that will increase enrollment capacity by 24 percent, including 16 additional infant spaces, expanding access to quality early childhood education for local families
Friends of Open Door Youth Services
$3,785.80
Replace a commercial refrigerator supporting daily meal service for youth residing in the organization’s emergency shelter
Lifespan Resources, Inc.
$25,000
Support the Meals on Wheels program serving homebound older adults in Clark and Floyd counties through nutritious meal delivery, wellness checks, and meaningful social connection
These discretionary grants follow the Community Foundation’s recently announced $62,630 competitive grant cycle, bringing CFSI’s total grantmaking over the past several weeks to more than $147,000.
Unlike many grant programs that restrict gifts to a specific purpose, the Community Impact Fund provides flexible, unrestricted resources that allow the Foundation to respond to emerging opportunities and community priorities throughout the year. Those investments are made possible through the generosity of donors who choose to support the fund, helping ensure CFSI can address both today’s needs and tomorrow’s challenges.
