Community Foundation Opens Applications for Youth Philanthropy Council

The Community Foundation of Southern Indiana (CFSI) is now accepting applications for its Youth Philanthropy Council (YPC), offering local high school students a unique opportunity to develop leadership skills, engage in community service, and make a lasting impact through grantmaking.

The program is open to students entering 9th through 11th grade in the upcoming school year, including those attending public, private, or homeschool programs. To be considered, candidates must be nominated by a school counselor, community leader, or current/former YPC member, and must complete the online application in full. Nominations will remain open through July 15, 2026.

Students selected for the Youth Philanthropy Council will be chosen based on demonstrated leadership ability, strong character, relevant skills, motivation to serve, availability, and a willingness to learn.

“The Youth Philanthropy Council is a wonderful way for students to gain real-world experience in leadership and community impact,” said Crystal Melcher, CFSI Vice President of Community Philanthropy and YPC leader. “Through this program, students go far beyond simply learning about philanthropy. They actively participate in it, helping shape the future of our community.”

At its core, the Youth Philanthropy Council is designed to give students a hands-on understanding of philanthropy by engaging them in meaningful, youth-driven service and real grantmaking decisions. Through the program, participants build leadership and decision-making skills while working alongside adult mentors to address community needs.

Along the way, they gain valuable experience in evaluating projects, stewarding funds responsibly, and contributing to the growth of a sustainable endowment that will support future generations of giving. Since awarding its first grants in 2002, the Youth Philanthropy Council has distributed more than $180,000 to support student-focused projects and programs throughout the community.

Today, a joint council serves both Clark and Floyd counties, bringing together bright, motivated student leaders who work collaboratively to learn about philanthropy, participate in service projects, and recommend grants that address local needs.
